Participants in BOBCATSSS 2024 will also have opportunities to discover some interesting information services in Coimbra.

Participation in these technical visits requires prior registration on a form that will be sent out to the participants in the next few days.

More detailed information can be viewed in the programme, as well as a description of each information service.

Wednesday, 24 January

This visit will allow you to discover the Catholic Major Seminary of Coimbra, next to the Botanical Garden. With more than 250 years, is a place where culture and spirituality connect with the city. The Old Library has about 9,000 books, between 1507 and 1800, that unveil theology and other knowledge.

This visit will allow you to discover the Herbarium of the University of Coimbra, the largest in Portugal, founded in the second half of the 19th century. The Herbarium has approximately 800.000 plant specimens with relevant information on attached labels, housed in special cabinets, organised in separate collections, a source of information for the botanical community.

Health Sciences Library, a dynamic and welcoming space that offers a wide range of physical and virtual resources and services to students, professors and researchers of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy, as well as to the national and international scientific community.

The Library and Information Services of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra help fulfil an essential part of the university’s teaching and research mission and form part of a more extensive network that serves its academic community. In addition to the central library, the Library and Information Services integrate thirty-seven research libraries and forty-four private libraries whose previous owners were renowned specialists in the areas covered by the libraries’ collections.

This visit will allow you to discover the private residence of Bissaya Barreto (1886-1974), surgeon, Medicine Professor and founder of an important social work in the country´s central region. The building, finished in 1925, is an example of an eclectic style. Beyond the building and the garden, the tourist can see inside the art collection, namely, furniture, porcelain, ceramic, painting, sculpture and tiles. The House Museum also has a Library and a Documentation Center.

The Archive of the University of Coimbra (AUC) is the depository of the invaluable documentation produced and received by the University of Coimbra, founded by D. Dinis, on March 1, 1290. The Archive of the University also includes the documental resources of the District Archive, which is associated to the AUC. In its double function as a university and district archive, provides services both for the civil community and to the academic community.
